what are the pros and cons of Moonlighting and is it legal in India.
So let us know what exactly a tech term that is getting popular in media means?
Moonlighting is the practice of holding a second job or talking about additional work outside of one's primary job. The term is often used to refer to workers who hold many jobs inpsite of working in on the primary job, but it can also apply to those who work extra hours outside of their regular job or take on freelance work. There are several types of moonlighting like
1. Blue moonlighting
2. Quarter moonlighting
3. Half moonlighting
4. Full moonlighting
There are a variety of reasons why someone might choose to moonlight , people want to earn extra income to help them to meet their financial needs and for thers it maybe a way to gain experience in the desired field or follow their passion or save up to gain experience in the desired field or follow their passion or save up for a specific goal such as a down payment on a house.
Managing two jobs can be difficult and sometimes risky of getting caught in the primary company and it is very vital to be organized and to plan ahead to make sure that both jobs are given the attention they deserve.
Many of us have this doubt in our mind and folks lemme tell you that moonlighting is ethical yes you read it correctly it's ethical then why there is a buzz about this because companies want their employees to be productive and in a way that they only focus in making their product freelancing or indulging in any other activity, Also there are other perspectives of moonlighting if someone is working so much that they are neglecting their personal life or working without informing their prime job, then that is when it may be unethical.
And also folks let us see whether moonlight is legal or not
Well, there is no law that exactly tells about the ban on moonlight practice and the reply for this is completely dependent on multiple factors such as employment agreements with the respective companies or organizations, work policies, and laws, etc.
For instance, moonlighting could be considered cheating if an employee is already contracted to another company and working for them full-time. However, if the employee is only working a few hours a week for another company, it might not be seen as cheating, It all depends on the contract that the employee has signed.
However, if your company does have a strict policy against moonlighting then one might want to think twice before doing it. After all, its your job and you don't want to risk of getting caught and losing your livelihood.
And lets what Employer's response on moonlighting
Recently, Rishad Premji chairman of Wipro tweeted about the moonlight practice-"There is a lot of chatter about the people moonlighting in the tech industry. This is cheating - plain and simple." Not only this, a few days later, Wipro fired around 300 employees for 'moonlighting'.
Other IT giants including Tata Consultancy Services(TCS), HCL, etc. have also expressed their views against moonlighting practice or dual employment scenarios.
In My opinion, before starting a side hustle or launching a business, employees should take a close look at their employment contract to make sure they are complying with any moonlighting policies. I would say to freelance the skill on websites such as Fiverr and many more if your skill outstands average people ,also companies should give their employees a certain period of time where they can moonlight if they have any debt or loans to pay in order to work in their company without worrying about financial condition about their family.
I hope guys this blog was informative, and also you can list down your opinions in the comment section.
